Health minister K K Shailaja who inaugurated the unit said that the aim was to control the prices of the drugs manufactured in the state. The state drugs control department will ensure that quality drugs are made available in the state at affordable prices.

This unit will also monitor the pricing of the drugs coming from other states and will take action if over-pricing of drugs is detected. The state drugs control department has also written to several drug manufacturers regarding the frequent increase in prices.

The drugs control department sources said that with the setting up of this unit, constant monitoring will be done in the market and the information of the prices charged by the manufacturers will be conveyed to the national pricing authority periodically.
